Holiday Houses

I watched you play with the Christmas houses today.
It’s not a toy, but you two play with them like they are.
You rearranged the little bottle brush trees
And slid the cars along pretend streets

I watched you and admired the innocence
I wished time would freeze,
and I could stay in this moment a little bit longer.
Knowing time melts like snow
how life as we know it dissolves too.

As you sat there imagining
I couldn’t help but dwell and envision
I pictured a day after I passed on
Where you’re rummaging through boxes of things
And you come across these houses
And I hope you want them.
I hope you take them and bring them home to your kids

And watch them play with the Christmas houses.
It’s not a toy, but they will play with them like they are.
They’ll rearrange little bottle brush trees
and slide the cars along pretend streets
You’ll watch them, admiring their innocence
And you’ll wish time could freeze,
and that you could stay in that moment a little bit longer.
